Position: Development Director 

Reports To: Managing Director   

Compensation: $37,000 - $40,000 + $7,000 benefits package (Health insurance and retirement match), based on experience 

FLSA: Exempt/Salaried  

About Lexington Children’s Theatre:  

Lexington Children’s Theatre’s (LCT) mission is to create imaginative and compelling theatre experiences for young people and families. Our vision is to impart, explore, foster, and develop artistry at all levels and ages in every theatrical discipline and educational opportunity through inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible programming and practice.    

Now in its 83rd season, Lexington Children’s Theatre is the state youth theatre of Kentucky and serves over 120,000 young people and families in a season. Over the past year, despite the challenges we have faced through the pandemic, LCT has had a great deal of success in the fundraising arena, and we are looking to build upon these successes through donor cultivation and stewardship. LCT has maintained its dedication to the vitality of storytelling and the role it can play in the lives of young people, and fundraising helps us underwrite that dedication. 

About the position:   

LCT is seeking a visionary, creative, and compassionate leader to head our ongoing fundraising initiatives. This individual will possess a strong understanding of the vitality of the arts in our community and their profound positive impact on young people. They will be passionate about building connections, community, and investment in these opportunities and how they can benefit quality of life, education, and our local economy.  Reporting to the Producing Artistic Director and Managing Director, the Development Director is responsible for leading our annual fund campaign, securing sponsorships, providing grant-writing assistance, coordinating fundraising events, and leading our major gifts campaign.  

The ideal candidate will: 

  • Have a strong desire to build relationships in the community, with prospective funders, LCT patrons, and local businesses. 
  • Possess the skills to motivate staff, board members, and volunteers. 
  • Have fundraising knowledge and experience. 
  • Create a fundraising plan and strategy for identifying, cultivating, and stewarding donors large and small. 
  • Function well as a part of LCT’s arts administration team. 

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:    

  • Annual Fund:
    • Coordinate Direct Mail and online giving campaigns. 
    • Identification, cultivation, and stewardship of individual donors through in-person meetings, emails, and phone calls. 
  • Sponsorships:
    • Identify, cultivate, and steward local businesses to secure sponsorships for LCT programming.
    • Fundraising Events: Serve as lead event coordinator for LCT’s annual fundraising gala, Celebrity Curtain Call, and work with arts admin team to secure auction items, sponsors, food and drink, and coordinate cast.
    • Serve as event coordinator for smaller fundraising events throughout the year. 
  • Major Gifts:
    • Oversee the Larry and Vivian Snipes Legacy Fund, including meeting with current and prospective donors, leading board committee meetings, and donor stewardship.
    • Work closely and collaboratively with the Producing Artistic Director and Managing Director to coordinate meetings with major donors. 
  • Grants:
    • Assist Managing Director as necessary with grant writing. 
  • Other:
    • Assist Marketing and Sales Director as needed with marketing initiatives.
    • Maintain development reports and budgets.
    • Attend monthly board meetings and report to board on fundraising goals and actuals. 

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. The range of benefits includes fully paid medical insurance, paid time off, a two-week holiday break, and retirement plan with a percentage match from the company.

Knowledge, skills, abilities, and preferred qualifications:     

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent related professional experience.   
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.   
  • Strong strategic, critical thinking and organizational/implementation skills.   
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook; experience with CRM software preferred but not required.  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing demands.  
  • Ability to unite and collaborate with staff, stakeholders, and community leaders.
