Academic Communications and Marketing Specialist

Anticipated Hiring Range Commensurate with experience ($57,500 - $62,000)
Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm; some night and weekend hours may be required

About the Department
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Communications team leads the development and execution of strategic, multi-platform content that clearly and measurably advances the mission, vision, and brand of NC State University, CALS, and the Office of Academic Programs. CALS Communications applies a fully integrated suite of skills — communications strategy, marketing, web design, content creation, graphics, and videography — to support CALS and the Office of Academic Programs communications and marketing plans. CALS Communications also provides communications consultation and services for the college’s 12 departments, programs, administrative units and NC State Extension. 
CALS Academic Programs provides CALS-administered courses and degree programs to more than 2,800 undergraduate students, with 2,450 in four year degree programs and 350 in the Agricultural Institute’s (AGI) two year degree programs, and more than 1,000 graduate students. Academic Programs faculty and staff are responsible for, among other things: course support and academic administration; recruiting and admissions; academic advising and student services; diversity and inclusion programs; scholarships and academic awards; international programs; internships and career services; teaching faculty appointments and support.
Essential Job Duties
As a member of the CALS Communications team, the Academic Communications and Marketing Specialist is the lead communicator for the college’s Academic Programs Office. The position works proactively with the Academic Programs Office to develop and execute marketing and communications initiatives that support four-year, two-year (AGI), and graduate programs, distance education programs, and appropriate non-credit programs; build awareness of student programs supporting access, success, diversity and inclusion, international student programs, and professional development; and help advance academic fundraising goals. This position will work closely with the Academic Programs Office to ensure that communications advance defined priorities.

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Effective interpersonal skills; must be able to establish and maintain relationships with external and internal audiences, clients and team members.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Experience in editing and publishing web and print content to ensure readability and
    audience appeal.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage projects with different priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press editorial style.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field
  • Five or more years of professional experience in a lead communications role with responsibilities for the development of communications and marketing strategies and campaigns, and writing and producing content.
